FAQs

Postnatal refers to the time after a birth of a child. The postnatal period begins after childbirth and typically ends after 6 weeks when the mother’s body, hormone levels and uterus size returns to a non-pregnant state.

Postnatal depletion is a physical and mental deterioration caused not by just the process of giving birth and breastfeeding, but by the stresses and strain of modern parenthood.

Postnatal depletion affects more than 50% of women and it can last up to 10 years. During pregnancy many vital nutrients are taken from a mother and passed to the growing fetus, and more nutrients are lost in the process of giving birth.

Combination of lack of sleep, poor nutrition and loss of nutrients leads to postnatal depletion. Mothers exhibit the symptoms such as fatigue, emotional exhaustion, mood swings, brain fog, and lack of focus when suffering from postpartum depletion.

Postpartum depression is a complex mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that happen in some women after giving birth.

Around one in seven women can develop postpartum depression (PPD). While women experiencing baby blues tend to recover quickly, PPD tends to last longer and severely affects women’s ability to return to normal function. PPD affects the mother and her relationship with the infant. Maternal brain response and behavior are compromised in PPD. Studies shown that, as many as half of PPD in new mothers go undiagnosed because of conflict in privacy and not wanting to disclose to close family members. There is also a stigma around new mothers in that disclosure may lead to abandonment and fear of lack of support.

During pregnancy, levels of the female hormones progesterone and oestrogen are the highest levels of all time. But as soon as your baby and the placenta are delivered, both progesterone and oestrogen plummet. This rapid change in hormones is why so many women feel up and down in the first few days after birth.

Several signs to look out for to detect hormonal imbalance:

  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Disorientated
  • Mood swings
  • Migraines
  • Insomnia
  • Hair loss
  • Dry skin
  • Constipation
  • Irregular menstrual cycles

Although the practices differ between cultures and races, it is essentially a list of practices to be done in order to ensure the health and well-being of the mum and the child. The biggest difference between extracted herbs and plant powders lies in the potency. Extracts focus on the part of the plant that contains the most bioactive phytochemicals for creating the extract versus using the whole plant. With an extract, not only are you using the more medicinally rich part of the plant but you are also then concentrating those compounds into less space through extraction.

Plant powders are still beneficial to consume, you’ll just have to take more over time to experience the same medicinal benefit you’d get from a lesser amount of plant extract. Another major difference between extracts and dry powders can be seen in the way your body absorbs the beneficial compounds. Extracts enter your bloodstream much faster, so you’ll experience the benefits pretty quickly after ingesting.
